I engaged Graham Carson from Carson & Associates for my family law matter. My experience had some positive aspects - he provided a very helpful and informative first appointment, and then did assist with some guidance in responding to an application for family court consent orders - but overall I was disappointed with the quality of service for the cost once on retainer. Graham also facilitated responses to the mother's lawyer; however I quickly learnt communications between legal representatives resulted in a very poor experience on my behalf as a client, which included substantial billed time. I was charged a rate of around $600 per hour, which was difficult for me financially as I was earning around $22 per hour (and that was before I lost my job). I later discovered there are other legal support options (like Legal Aid and support groups) that he didn’t point out to me. I was most underwhelmed to be charged for things like courtesy emails assuring Graham that payment has been made, and requests for the parenting & financial orders (important legal documents needed to proceed with the divorce) were not provided to me at the time (I then resorted to asking for them from my ex-wife instead). I now attend a community support group in Narara (DIDS) that has helped me understand the process and handle many things myself, saving me a lot of money. Today I utilise many independent legal resources including Family Resource Advice line, Family Law Access, Court Duty lawyers, the Central Coast Community Resource Centre, I check the suitability of my communications with ChatGPT, and I get my court documents directly - simply by logging on to the Commonwealth Courts portal. If I need a lawyer, I pay them only casually after that. There were also issues with communication and timeliness - for example, I had to chase up copies of my court orders and clarify points that I thought should have been managed more efficiently. Some charges also appeared to relate to onboarding and background information that I had already provided when I followed Graham from his previous law firm, which was ironic because I chose to do that for loyalty and efficiency reasons. In my opinion, the overall value for money was poor given my circumstances. I would recommend that others in similar financial situations research all their options and learn as much as possible about the Family Court process before committing to high-fee legal representation.
