Hobart Community Legal Service

Hobart Community Legal Service gives free legal help to people and community groups in southern Tasmania. It is a community legal centre that started in 1985 and focuses on people who are disadvantaged.

The service offers free legal information, advice, referrals and, in some cases, representation. People can come to it with problems about Centrelink, child support, family law, consumer disputes, criminal charges, employment and family violence.

It also runs legal education programs and publishes the Tasmanian Law Handbook, an easy-to-read online guide to the law.

Hobart Community Legal Service has an office at 166 Macquarie Street, Hobart, and a second office at Covehill Shopping Centre, Bridgewater. It serves people and communities in southern Tasmania.

The service helps with Centrelink and welfare rights, child support, family law information, consumer disputes, minor criminal matters, employment problems and family violence or elder abuse. Criminal help covers traffic offences, assault, drug offences and restraint orders. Employment help covers unfair dismissal, discrimination, workplace bullying and underpaid wages. All advice is free, and representation is limited and offered in some cases.
