Illawarra Legal Centre

Illawarra Legal Centre is an independent, not-for-profit community legal centre in Wollongong. It gives free legal advice and help to people in the Illawarra who live with disadvantage or have special needs.

The centre opened in 1985. People can reach it by phone, at its Wollongong office or at outreach locations. Its services include general law, tenancy, welfare rights, financial counselling, child support and help for women facing domestic and family violence.

It also runs an Aboriginal Legal Access Program, a Children's Court Assistance Scheme and a student service for University of Wollongong students.

The centre's office is on Keira Street in Wollongong, with outreach locations around the region. It gives free legal advice and financial counselling across the Wollongong, Shellharbour and Kiama areas. Its tenants and welfare rights services reach as far as Wingecarribee, Shoalhaven, Eurobodalla and Bega Valley.

The centre gives free advice in most areas of law and may offer ongoing help. It has specific services for tenants, people with Centrelink problems, child support, and women who are victims of family violence. It also offers financial counselling, Children's Court assistance and an Aboriginal Legal Access Program. It uses litigation as a last resort.
