I was recommended James Wallace for family law advice (Ramnsland Laidler Lawyers) by a lawyer friend and initially found him to be friendly, thoughtful, and genuine. However, I was disappointed with the quality of advice and professionalism throughout my dealings with him. James advised against using the Child Support Agency (CSA), leaving me $700 short each month of what my ex should have been paying. He also recommended an expensive mediator who later acknowledged, after a formal complaint, that their advice in a particular part of the mediation, was poor. Throughout the process, there was no clear pathway provided for next steps, which caused further uncertainty. I was also concerned by James admitting to playing online games during work hours, which became a distraction during an online mediation session. When mediation ended earlier than expected, my request to use the remaining paid time for further discussions and organisation was dismissed. When I asked if he would use the time working, he joked that yes, he was very busy. I responded, "Lucky you—you get to charge double payments," to which he laughed it off and agreed, saying, "Yes, I guess I do." Additionally, during a conversation, James disclosed that he had worked on a criminal trial involving a man who had assaulted a female colleague and lost the case. While he did not share extensive details, he expressed sympathy for the man, saying he felt sorry that "one mistake" would affect the man's life forever. I found this deeply troubling and inappropriate, especially given the serious nature of the offence and what I had gone through myself. When I later reached out to query a few matters and asked for clarification on their policy regarding mediation and the appropriate use of clients' time, I never received any communication back, which further undermined my confidence in his professionalism. While James' manner was approachable, my experience raised serious doubts about his expertise, professionalism, and judgment, and I would caution others considering his services.
