Tasmanian Refugee Legal Service

The Tasmanian Refugee Legal Service (TRLS) gives free migration legal help to refugees, migrants, asylum seekers and other humanitarian entrants in Tasmania. It is a not-for-profit based in Hobart and has operated since 2013.

Its clients often cannot get legal help elsewhere because of money, language or past trauma. TRLS helps with protection visa applications, family reunification and visa problems linked to family violence.

The team includes lawyers, law students and volunteers. TRLS says it is the only dedicated refugee, migrant, asylum seeker and humanitarian entrant legal service in Tasmania.

TRLS has one office at Level 1, 319 Liverpool Street, Hobart. It serves Tasmanian residents and offers advice by phone or in person. It also represents clients before the Administrative Review Tribunal and the Federal Court.

TRLS works in refugee and migration law. Its services include onshore protection visa applications (subclass 866), family reunification and child visa (subclass 101) applications.

Its Family Violence Migration Service gives free, confidential advice to people on temporary visas whose visa status is affected by family violence. TRLS also helps with interviews with the Department of Home Affairs, tribunal and court matters, and Ministerial Intervention requests. All services are free, and interpreting is available if needed.
