ATSILS

ATSILS gives free and low-cost legal help to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people across Queensland. It is a non-profit, community-based organisation that was set up in 1972 to protect the legal and human rights of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

The service handles criminal, family and civil law matters. It also runs community legal education, coronial and public sector monitoring, and Throughcare services. Casework is subject to a means and merit test, and some clients may pay a contribution on a sliding scale.

The Maroochydore office is one of more than 20 across the state. The free call number is 1800 012 255. After hours it takes custody notifications for new arrests only.

ATSILS has a Maroochydore office on Aerodrome Road, which moved to a new address in December 2025. It serves Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people on the Sunshine Coast. The service as a whole works from offices across Queensland, with its head office in Brisbane.

Its offices offer 24 hour help at police stations for people who are arrested. Casework is means and merit tested.
