ATSILS

ATSILS helps Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people across Queensland with criminal, family and civil law problems. It is a non-profit, community-based legal service that has worked in Queensland since 1972.

The service gives legal advice and represents clients in court. It also runs community legal education, law reform work, coronial and public sector monitoring, and a Throughcare program to reduce reoffending.

People can call the free line on 1800 012 255 during business hours for any legal matter. After hours, the line takes custody notifications for new arrests only. Casework is subject to a means and merit test, and some clients may get free help.

ATSILS has a head office in Brisbane and more than 20 offices and satellite sites across Queensland, including one at 135 Margaret Street, Toowoomba. It serves Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities throughout the state, and the Toowoomba office also takes non-criminal matters from Goondiwindi.

ATSILS handles criminal, family and civil law matters, giving advice and representation. It also runs Throughcare services to address reoffending, community legal education, and coronial and public sector monitoring. The service offers 24 hour assistance at police stations, and its offices are staffed by a team of more than 200 across Queensland.
