Tasmanian Aboriginal Legal Service

The Tasmanian Aboriginal Legal Service helps Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people across Tasmania with criminal, family and child safety matters. Its services are free.

Lawyers are on call 24/7 to give urgent advice to people in police custody. The service also acts in the Magistrates Court, the Supreme Court and appeals, and helps with parenting matters and child safety advice and appearances.

Its SiS program supports victims and survivors of family violence and sexual assault. Staff can also link clients with support services such as housing and financial help. The service can be reached on freecall 1800 595 162.

The service runs statewide from offices in Hobart, Launceston and Burnie. It works with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people across Tasmania.

The service specialises in criminal law and in family and child safety law. Criminal work covers Magistrates Court, Supreme Court and appeal matters, plus urgent advice for people in police custody. Family work covers parenting matters and child safety. It is not funded for financial settlements or divorce. SiS is its family violence prevention legal service.
